Functional nutrition understands that food supplies more than the building blocks needed for your body’s chemistry. It also supplies biochemical information that directs the activity of your genes and the physiology of your tissues and organs. Functional Foods have specific health benefits that exceed their basic nutritional value. They may enhance immunity, physical performance and mental focus, improve circulation, decrease inflammation, and speed recovery from stress or injury. The term is usually applied to foods that are modified or combined in ways that increase their health benefits.
Dr. Galland has been researching and teaching the clinical effects of Functional Foods since the 1980’s. In 2004 he was invited to create the section on Functional Foods for the world-renowned Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition and was invited to update his chapter for the next edition in 2013.
In 2017, he was asked to design a line of recipes for enhancing the health benefits of coffee in partnership with Jack’s Stir Brewed Coffee, the first organic coffee house in New York City and a downtown phenomenon.
He continues to use Functional Foods wherever appropriate in his medical practice.
