Functional Nutrition

Functional nutrition understands that food supplies more than the building blocks needed for your body’s chemistry. It also supplies biochemical information that directs the activity of your genes and the physiology of your tissues and organs. Functional Foods have specific health benefits that exceed their basic nutritional value. They may enhance immunity, physical performance and mental focus, improve circulation, decrease inflammation, and speed recovery from stress or injury. The term is usually applied to foods that are modified or combined in ways that increase their health benefits.

Dr. Galland has been researching and teaching the clinical effects of Functional Foods since the 1980’s. In 2004 he was invited to create the section on Functional Foods for the world-renowned Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition and was invited to update his chapter for the next edition in 2013. Because of his research in functional nutrition and nutritional supplementation, Dr. Galland received the Seelig Magnesium Award from the American College of Nutrition in 2011.

In 2019, Dr. Galland was asked to design a unique dietary supplement that would answer the question: What supplement that does not exist would you like to see? The answer was Dr. Galland’s TLC, an extract of 3 Functional Food ingredients in a liposomal deliver system:

  • Thymoquinone (from black cumin seed)
  • Luteolin (a bioflavonoid found in many vegetables, especially celery)
  • Curcumin (a complex of bioflavonoids found in turmeric)
